Polymers

A polymer is best defined as a useful chemical made of many repeating units. Each unit is a “-mer,” so many repeating units create the term “poly-mer.” It forms a one-, two-, or three-dimensional network of units composed of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, chlorine, fluorine, phosphorus, and silicon.
Polymers are large molecules comprising thousands—or even millions—of atoms bonded in a repeating pattern, much like links in a chain. Many “-mers” link together or polymerize, similar to stringing beads or making paper garlands.
Polymers occur naturally and can be synthesized to meet specific needs. Polyethylene, for example, is a key material used to produce a wide variety of plastic bags and containers.
